Get a summer job and join real world

Many students would have learned a new language, or taken part in extra-curricular activities during the long summer vacation.

I decided to do something different and funny - like getting a job.

I was a promoter at the Food Expo, selling things such as fish, mushroom and abalone.

A lot of people visited the exhibition, so I was extremely busy.

I had to introduce products to my customers and pack the  food they bought.

Some of our customers were of different nationalities so I had to speak English as well as Putonghua.

At first, I was very annoyed because I did not expect to face such a challenge.

Later on, I got used to it and was glad that I could overcome my difficulties.

My colleagues were very kind, helpful and humorous. Although I made a few mistakes, they didn't scold me.

Instead, they taught me again and again, showing great patience.

In addition, they shared jokes with me and we had a great time.

Now I know how to get along with people and have more confidence in my abilities.

I would advise students to get a summer job and learn more about life.

A lack of respect

A nine-year-old boy who entered Hong Kong Baptist University  is the youngest student at a tertiary institution in the city.

Many journalists  interviewed him on his first day at university recently.

He may be a maths genius, but I was disappointed by his attitude.

When journalists asked what he had learned that day, he replied that they wouldn't understand.

Although he is still very young, I think he should learn to respect others and behave like a university student.

He is only good at maths, so he should go back to primary school, where he can learn English, Chinese, science and  communication skills.

Try to learn from high achievers I will be taking the HKCEE next year.

I hope all fifth formers  can learn from the 10 top students of this year.

None of them are bookworms; they have struck the right balance between work and play.

Apart from their studies, they spend  time on extra-curricular programmes and community service.

According to these high achievers,  good time management is the key to success.

So, draw up a schedule, treasure your time and pave the way to a bright future.

School is fun

I have many great memories of my school life.

I enjoyed my time in primary school, where I had a good class teacher, Ms Luk.

She taught me many important things about life.

Although I failed to gain a place in my favourite school - Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School - I am happy at my present school.  Ms Cheung is my class teacher who also takes English lessons.

I can learn a lot from her.

I think I am very lucky. I wish I can continue my studies at the University of Hong Kong.

Stop teasing your classmates

Have you ever been  humiliated by your peers?  I think  some of you have gone through such experiences.

Sometimes you may feel frustrated about what they say or do.

I feel sorry for one of my classmates, May. She is being teased by other students since the beginning of the academic year.

This is  mental abuse, but I'm not brave enough to  speak up about my classmates' bad behaviour.

Please remember that everyone has feelings and want to maintain their dignity. Don't target the weakest student in your class.

Having a ball - win or lose

I like to play football because it is such an exciting sport.

I am a member of my school team and we took part in the inter-school football competition.

Although we lost, we were not unhappy because we tried our best.

A lot of people have their own football competitions. Some will win, some will lose. I hope that they can be modest and try their best in every game.

I also believe that every school should have a football team and provide good facilities for the players.

I hope we will win the inter-school championship one day.

Let children pursue their interests

There is intense competition among Primary Six students to gain a place in  good secondary schools.

Many parents are worried about their children's future so they have to take private lessons, including music and art.

To make matters worse, they have to attend tutorials in order to maintain their academic standards.

This is very tiring for the students who are  under great pressure to succeed.

Parents shouldn't force their children to learn several things at the same time.

They should be allowed to pursue their interests freely in a relaxed environment.
