A group of young people are bringing books and compassion to poor communities around the world
Aiming to bring knowledge and hope to underprivileged people around the world, American Whitney Polstra and Swiss Benjamin Lengacher boarded the Doulos, the world's oldest active ocean-going passenger ship.
The 94-year-old ship is home to more than 300 volunteers and the world's largest floating book fair.
While visitors stroll around the deck, browse through books and take photos, the volunteers are busy keeping Doulos in shape.
'We have breakfast at half-past seven, attend a community gathering at eight and start work at nine. We work eight hours a day, five days a week,' said Ms Polstra, a 22-year-old student from Georgia in the United States, who has been on the boat for 20 months.
Every volunteer has an important role: for example, Ms Polstra works in the bookshop, while Mr Lengacher is responsible for fixing the toilets and pumping system.
