SDTV (Standard Definition Television)
a digitalised version of the conventional television system; both have the same screen format and picture resolution. SDTV images are free from ghosting and snowing, commonly found on analogue broadcasts.
HDTV (High Definition Television)
a TV system that provides up to five times the resolution of SDTV. Images are usually displayed on a wide screen instead of the square screen of analogue TV. Wide screen supports an aspect ratio of 16:9; square screen has an aspect ratio of 4:3.
Aspect ratio
the width to height ratio of a TV picture.
