A TELEVISION actor testified yesterday that he was coerced into joining the Sun Yee On triad society at a Tsim Sha Tsui restaurant in the summer of 1992.

 TVB actor Ng Kai-ming, 30, had earlier told the District Court that he was worried that media reports about what happened to him might damage his image and career.

  Ng was testifying on the third day of the trial of To Luen-shun, 28, who has denied assisting in the management of the Sun Yee On triad society.

 To is accused of conducting a triad ceremony inside the Harbour View Seafood Restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui in May 1992.

 To also denies being an office bearer of the triad society, and claiming to be a Sun Yee On member between 1989 and 1992.

 When first questioned by prosecutor David Tolliday-Wright about what happened in the restaurant, Ng asked whether he could consult his lawyer.

 But Deputy Judge Wright said there was no justification for him to ask the court to restrict the media from reporting his evidence.

  He also assured the actor that reporters would it make quite clear that Ng was not a willing participant.

  Ng said he and his friend, Wong Ching-hei, met a group of men at a Tsim Sha Tsui karaoke bar in the summer of 1992 to discuss a monetary dispute between Mr Wong and a group led by So Kar-wai.

  The actor had also invited To and the late triad boss Andely Chan Yiu-hing.

  Ng said he was forced to go to the Harbour View Seafood Restaurant by Mr So after the karaoke bar meeting.

  He went into a small VIP room where Mr So told him to join the Sun Yee On triad society, he said.

   After a 20-minute stay, Ng went to the dining hall where he saw Chan and To sitting at one table with some other men, the court heard.

  Ng said a triad initiation ceremony was later performed on him in the hall, during which his finger was pierced with a needle.

 Cross-examined by defence counsel Simon Westbrook, Ng agreed that he saw To before the ceremony took place; and that To had left at some point.

 He said he knew that To was a Chinese boxer who ran a boxing school but he had no knowledge that To was a former Hong Kong champion.

  Ng agreed that he thought it might be useful to ask To to come along with some of his boxers, no matter whether or not they were triad.

 Mr Westbrook also challenged Ng's testimony that he could not remember the exact date of the karaoke incident. According to Ng's police statement, it occurred on August 17, 1992.

  The trial continues.
