Internet Everywhere
PCCW's netvigator everywhere service is self-explanatory: it promises connection to the Internet everywhere in Hong Kong.
Based on a USB modem that plugs into any laptop computer, the service uses the mobile network as well as coverage from the operator's increasingly numerous Wi-Fi hotspots - the latest being payphone booths around town.
The main advantage of having Wi-Fi is its speed which, at anything from 5 Mbps to 50 Mbps depending on the Wi-Fi version you're using, can be several times that of mobile networks - even HSDPA networks offer a maximum of 7.2 Mbps.
Perhaps the most important feature of netvigator everywhere is the software - it automatically selects the optimal network connection with the strongest signal strength. The software will also automatically 'hand off' the connection between networks, so you can move around the city and never have to reconnect when you move from one coverage area to the next.
The service starts at HK$488 a month (unlimited usage), excluding the HK$2,480 initial outlay for the modem itself. With this set-up, you'll never have to worry about not being able to get online. You'll probably even get rid of your fixed line broadband subscription.
There is a cheaper alternative. For HK$158 a month, you get unlimited usage on PCCW's increasingly extensive network of Wi-Fi hotspots. You don't get coverage absolutely everywhere, but you won't have to shell out for the extra modem - most new laptops come with integrated Wi-Fi.
