THE Government has a crucial role to play in helping the manufacturing sector move up the technology and value-added ladder, Director-General of Industry Denise Yue says. The Government had set up initiatives in recent years to support the development and application of indigenous technologies, she said. ''One such initiative is the establishment of the Industrial Technology Centre which is already providing incubation facilities for technology-based start-up companies.'' Ms Yue said that manufacturers should take advantage of the technologies and experts offered by China. ''In this regard, the Governor in his recent policy address to Legco stated that the administration intended to discuss with the Chinese authorities the creation of an applied research centre, drawing together the expertise of our tertiary institutions and of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.'' Secretary for Trade and Industry Chau Tak-hay would soon meet heads of the local tertiary institutions to discuss how best to take the matter forward, she said.
