Mainland companies are more reluctant to disclose carbon emissions information than their regional counterparts, a survey revealed yesterday.

The Carbon Disclosure Project Asia Report surveyed 166 companies in 10 different Asian authorities this year, asking them whether climate change presented any commercial risks or opportunities to their businesses. The survey by the Association for Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Asia also asked if they had an emissions measurements policy and reduction targets.

The overall response rate was 26 per cent. India had the highest response rate of 42 per cent and South Korea second with 36 per cent. At the bottom was the Philippines, where no company responded.

Out of 22 sampled mainland companies, only one - China Unicom - answered the questionnaire.

In Hong Kong, eight out of 34 surveyed companies responded.

These were China National Offshore Oil Corporation, Hang Seng Bank, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, Cathay Pacific Airways, MTR Corporation, Swire Pacific, CLP Holdings and Hong Kong Electric.

'The regulatory infrastructure for company work on carbon emission is still immature in Asia,' the report said.
