Preslyn-saga Catacutan, who was jailed for stealing from singer Jacky Cheung Hok-yau and his wife, former actress May Lo Mei-mei, said she hoped the ban on the couple hiring Filipino domestic helpers would be permanent.

Speaking from the Manila suburb where she is staying with her cousins, Ms Catacutan, 30, said she had complained to the Philippine consulate last year about how the Cheungs treated their domestic helpers.

When she was fired, she was told by Ms Lo that she was 'the 60th helper' - all Filipinos - she had sacked.

Ms Catacutan, who previously worked in the Middle East and Singapore without problems, said she still hoped to find a Hong Kong employer. After she served her three-month sentence she was the subject of a removal order, not a deportation, so she believes she will be allowed back.

After Ms Catacutan applied to a Philippine agency, paying 80,000 pesos (HK$13,800) to find a job in Hong Kong, she did not realise she had signed up for the Canto-pop star as her contract was signed by Ms Lo. She said she was hired to replace one of four helpers who had recently been dismissed.

During her stay in the household, she said she saw three women fired - 'one stayed only two days, another a week'. Her main duties involved cleaning the house - a four-storey luxury flat with penthouse in Repulse Bay, with each level about 5,700 sq ft - and ironing and washing the family's clothes, including suits worn by Cheung for concerts and TV appearances.
