Beijing 2008 is still 10 months away but one of Hong Kong's top-ranked chefs is competing this weekend at the Olymp Culinaric. This epicurean Olympics takes place in Vienna at its fancy new Uniqua Tower in a restaurant called Platinum Vienna tomorrow. Although its main purpose is to entertain business executives during a networking conference rather than to pit elite chefs in a sporting cook-off, it's still quite a prestigious honour for the Kee Club's GianLuigi Bonelli (right) to be invited as one of the five kitchen athletes. 'GianLuigi was previously invited as a celebrity guest chef at the famous Ikarus restaurant in Hangar-7 in Salzburg for a month, so they know him there,' said a Kee Club representative of Bonelli's inclusion. The posh guests will be served a total of 10 courses (presumably two courses per chef). Bonelli is nominally representing the continent of Asia in going for gold. The posh event will host 400 guests. Seats are sold only by tables but the cost is equivalent to Euro400 (HK$4,400) per person. Organisers are planning to take this Olympic idea to London next year. Incidentally, another top chef at the event will soon have a Hong Kong connection. Australia's Greg Malouf who has guested at Olive in SoHo will be opening Malouf's at the Elements mall on Monday.
