The Beijing Olympics are less than a year away and many companies are capitalising on the event by opening new branches on the mainland. Macau has also sprung to life with new Vegas-style casino hotels. Jobs in the region are plentiful. Are Hongkongers taking this opportunity to work across the border? Classified Post asked various professionals.

'Commuting to China would be troublesome, and I have never considered living there. As a society, I feel China is dangerous and less advanced. As for Macau, a friend who lives there once recommended a job with a higher salary, but in the end I did not go because I was not familiar with the place.' Eva Lam, administration

'I did think of going to China at one point because of the opportunities there. I would not want to work in Macau though, because I do not like the environment. It is chaotic there and I do not like that, and the whole city is infested with casinos.' Polly Ding,

education

'I would consider China because the market is still relatively young so there is plenty of room for growth. The possibilities are great. When I think of Macau, I think of casinos and not a whole lot of variety in terms of jobs or lifestyle.' Peter Woo, IT/marketing

'Macau is overwhelmed with casinos and a big job market that doesn't require much education. Anyone who can breathe can work there, which is not very motivating. Also, the place doesn't offer much in my field. China's slow civil advancement due to its long self-isolation leaves a lot to be desired of the country.' Olivia Low, manager/education
