Tell us more about the Carnival of Venice, which you've arranged and will perform with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong on Tuesday. What's so special about this piece?
Trumpeter Allen Vizzutti:
'I'll be performing the famous Carnival of Venice, a theme and variations based on a familiar folk melody, My Hat It has Three Corners. This particular version is written by Delaware Staigers. I further arranged the Carnival for symphony orchestra as well as adapted it for chamber orchestra. It is a real crowd pleaser.
How do you manage to mix classical and jazz playing in the one concert?
'I have been living, breathing, practising, dreaming, writing and submerging myself in jazz and classical music simultaneously since 1970, when I went to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. I have participated in concerts of combined styles of music ever since. Mixing styles is dangerous ... [but] I have high standards, a good sense of authenticity and quality, and know my shortcomings.'
