A lot of people talk about charity but not enough actually put their words into action. You have two chances this weekend to make good, though. Tomorrow morning, former journalist and the current co-chair of Friends Unlimited's elderly services, Amanda Yinting Cheung, is taking a group of seniors from Kwun Tong's Hong Ling Tsui Ping Elderly Centre out for a casual hike. The retirees will be between 55 and 80 years old and often they have little outside contact or even a chance to get out of their surrounding. They're looking for volunteers to join and assist the hike from the Quarry Bay Tree Walk to Taikoo Shing. It will be an early one starting at 8.15am and they expect to finish in a couple of hours, so you'll still have the rest of the day to yourself. Interested people can contact Cheung at 9807 7154. Then on Sunday, Michelle Garnault and her M at the Fringe staff will for the fourth consecutive year join the International Coastal Cleanup to pick up rubbish at the beach at Waterfall Bay in Wah Fu (just past Pok Fu Lam) between 2pm and 4pm. Participants will be split into two groups: the more daring will clean the rocky shorelines and those less athletic will clear the gentler terrain of the sandy beach. Shoes, not sandals, are advised and you should also bring along a drink for yourself. But gloves and rubbish bags will be provided. For directions or information, call Dominique Harris at 2810 7787.
