Great Winter Escapes - St Moritz, Switzerland

Reading Time:2 minutes
Why you can trust SCMP

Longing for colder climes? Whether you yearn for the slopes of Sapporo or the coffee houses of Vienna, all these cities have something in common - a crisp climate and (hopefully) plenty of snow.

The winter playground of the rich and famous, St Moritz is the most glamorous and glitzy of the ski resorts. Wrap up in your most expensive furs, install yourself on a mountain terrace with a glass of champagne and settle down to some serious people-watching. Oh, and the skiing is pretty sensational, too.

Stay

The place to stay - money no object - is Badrutt's Palace Hotel (Via Serlas 27, tel: 41 81 837 1000; www.badrutts palace.com). It opened in 1896 and is still the centre of St Moritz's social scene. The more discreet prefer the quieter luxury of the Kulm Hotel (Via Veglia 18, tel: 41 81 836 8000; www.kulmhotel-stmoritz.ch).

For lunch, try La Marmite (Corviglia, tel: 41 81 833 6355; www.mathisfood.ch), part of Mathis Food Affairs, a group of restaurants situated at the top station of the Corviglia funicular. It might not look promising from the outside, but it is reputed to be one of the best 'high-altitude' restaurants in the Alps. Caviar and truffles are a speciality and booking is essential. There is an excellent cafeteria there for the more modest. Johri's Talvo (via Gunels 15, tel: 41 81 833 4455; www.talvo.ch) looks like something out of a fairy tale and has two Michelin stars.
