What used to be called information technology (IT) now has the word 'communications' (ICT) built in.
The BlackBerry is an example of a product in the market, which blends information, telecommunications and technology. PCCW Solutions is an example of an ICT enterprise  aimed at providing the widest spectrum of solution services to the market.
The company believes that, although not selling hardware products, PCCW Solutions' scale and ability in the ICT service industry is more comprehensive than many competitors.
As expansion continues and sophistication increases, the company is urgently seeking IT securities specialists, business development managers, project managers and solutions architects. The people who possess these skills are in great demand.
'We are expanding our business spectrum and taking on more mission critical projects across the region. There is a huge demand for professionals, be it for programmers, system designers or database analysts,' said George Fok Yiu-cheung, managing director of PCCW Solutions, which employs 2,000 ICT professionals and is one of the largest ICT service providers.
'In addition to the internal training programme to help all upgrade their skills, we are seeking fresh blood from the market.
'Our service range goes from consultancy to system designing, application development, and infrastructure solutions, and we are expanding from Hong Kong to Greater China, and international markets.
'Because of such a wide spectrum and rapid growth we have to continuously recruit new people,' Mr Fok said.
A well-known system application that was designed, built and operated by PCCW Solutions is Hong Kong's Smart ID card.
Other large scale projects implemented include the building of credit card and back-office systems for major financial and banking institutions, and IT infrastructure services for multinational companies in the mainland.
PCCW Solutions operates seven data centres that offer hosting services. Some international banks and a major health care organisation outsource their long-term operation systems to PCCW for managed services and ongoing maintenance. The company also designs and builds data centres for multinational corporations and leading banks.
'With such diverse services, what our staff experience in three to four years is comparable to what others may achieve in five to 10 years in other companies,' Mr Fok said. 'Our asset is our people. That's why we have to put emphasis on recruitment and training.'
Other than classroom and e-learning for state of the art technologies, graduates undergo a two-year structured training programme where they are appointed to at least three job attachments in different areas to help them gain broader exposure to the technology world.
All staff are encouraged to join  industry associations and to attain international certifications and accreditation such as Certified Oracle Database Analyst, Certified IT Security Auditor and Certified System Marketer, to ensure that the team is adhering to the world-class industry practice and standards.
'Some of our team members gain sponsorships to study for specialised qualifications such as accountancy. Certified accountants will become part of a team that handles projects for financial companies or the government,' Mr Fok explained.
Candidates have a world of opportunity to learn and apply their expertise. They must have matching levels of ambition and desire to attain deeper and more comprehensive knowledge of ICT to work for PCCW Solutions.
'We want those who have a strong drive to excel, with good communication and technical skills, to become our team members,' Mr Fok said.
To retain staff, the firm encourages internal promotions, career development in a direction of the employee's choice and market-level remuneration.
PCCW Solutions, the ICT flagship of PCCW, has expanded its training centres to the mainland this year to turn local IT graduates into international-standard enterprise software engineers by improving their technical, business, social and language skills.
