Trial therapy: Two in one

Clare Murray

What is it?

A combination of two of Body Zen's three signature treatments, based on traditional Chinese medicine methods. The first, qixue, or meridian circulation promotion therapy, is said to unblock the body's meridians, promote better circulation and relieve muscle pain. The second, circu.pro, or hot massage therapy, uses fire to get rid of cold and excessive water trapped within the body.

What's the atmosphere like?

The vestibule is beige and grey with dark wood floors, and the treatment room is spacious and rest inducing.

How were the treatments?

Two masseuses carry out the treatments. The qixue involves a vigorous rubbing down with three small metal balls attached to a fork-like instrument. It gives one a feeling of well-being, rather than relaxation. The circu.pro requires you to trust the therapist: the body is massaged with a lotion containing Chinese herbs then key areas are covered in towels and set alight. The sensation is not unpleasant.

What were the results?

Nothing perceptible, but the benefits are internal and I suspect continual treatment is needed.

What else?

I might have been the last customer of the evening because I felt slightly rushed. I wasn't offered tea or the opportunity to have a shower after the treatment. The price list only offers treatments in packages of 10 or 20, so you have to ask how much a single treatment is.

How much, and where is it?

A single treatment costs HK$730. Body Zen, 27/F, 8 Wyndham St, Central, tel: 2770 6728.
