Meanwhile, in the other SAR ... Students, teachers and parents took aim at The International School of Macau (TIS) dodge ball competition earlier this month. More than 300 people took part in the school's first community day held on October 6. Community days began at TIS last year to give students and teachers a chance to get together outside the classroom. Initially only secondary students participated in the events, but due to the high level of interest, junior grades are now included. Grade Three student Emily Varga described the dodge ball tournament as a lot of fun. 'My favourite part was getting to play against the teachers,' Emily said. 'I was the only one left on my team and I had to try and get five teachers out and my dad was one of them.' Teacher Stephen Bolton said the response to the day was 'overwhelming' and there were a lot more people than expected. 'Everyone seems to really enjoy the good-natured competition,' Mr Bolton said. 'All in all, it's a good day.' Several community days will be held throughout the year, with students competing in volleyball, baseball and soccer. An official function will be held at TIS on October 25 to open the school's new sunshade structure which covers the playground. Principal Real Hryhirchuk said it was one of many new facilities opened at the school this year, which included a portable laptop computer lab, an artificial turf soccer field and a ping pong room. 'We've had a great response to the sunshade structure from both parents and students alike,' Mr Hryhirchuk said. 'The playground equipment can now be used for longer periods of time, particularly when it is hot and sunny.'
