Filming and TV productionExpanding mainland market means big window of opportunity opens

The grim outlook for the local film industry might mean it has closed the door for people who aspire to become a director or television producer. But the film and television industry's boom in the mainland and the emergence of new technology have opened a whole new window for veterans and novices in Hong Kong.

Those who were hoping to join the field of television and film production should have a broader vision and they should focus on not just the local scene but also a much bigger market, including the mainland and the Asia-Pacific region, said William Pfeiffer, chief executive at Celestial Pictures, a company with business in television and film production and distribution.

Mr Pfeiffer said despite the decline of output in the local industry, there were still new opportunities for local talent.

'About 15 years ago Hong Kong made more than 200 films while China made about 100. But now, the situation has reversed. China produces 350 films and Hong Kong has 50 to 60. Altogether there are 400 films being made per year,' Mr Pfeiffer said.

'We have an office in Beijing and our films are shot in China. There are opportunities in the film business if you are willing to travel.
