After eight years of managing school reforms, Hong Kong's former top education civil servant is now facing life at the sharp end of teaching in the mainland.

Former permanent secretary for education and manpower Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun last month took up the post of honorary principal of an experimental through school in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

Huizhen Academy was established in 1996, jointly funded by the municipal government and the Fan Family Charitable Trust, a foundation set up by Mrs Law's parents and run by her brother, executive councillor Henry Fan Hung-ling.

Deputy principal Xu Fen said the foundation had appointed Mrs Law honorary principal in September, and she had been set the task of developing links with overseas schools to set up student exchanges.

'We want to increase our students' international exposure,' she said. 'Mrs Law has quite a strong education background, so we also hope she will be able to help us improve the quality of our teaching.'

She said Mrs Law had already made a number of trips to the school, and was due to arrive again on Monday.
