Purton returns favour to Man by scoring easy win on Double Luck
Double Luck wasn't Zac Purton's first winner in Hong Kong but it was certainly the easiest and repaid a debt of thanks to trainer Manfred Man Ka-leung by putting him on the season's scoreboard.
Man became the second-last trainer this season to rack up a win, leaving only Alex Wong Yu-on, who corrected that situation later in the day.
'When I first arrived here, I didn't know anyone so I was asking around for rides at trackwork. Manfred found me a couple but more importantly he said he'd try to put me on a nice horse, not just any old horse, and this was the horse he picked,' Purton said yesterday.
'Manfred's a great guy and has been unlucky not to win one before now - he's had quite a high percentage of minor placings - so I'm really pleased that I could be the one to put his first on the board with Double Luck.'
And it was a win that was never in doubt, with Purton parking the three-year-old in the box seat to the home turn from gate one and Double Luck did the rest to win by 2 1/2 lengths.
'I guess it was disappointing that he didn't win at Happy Valley first time out when he was expected to from gate one there, but I think that was just his inexperience on such a tight track.
