A young triad turncoat failed to play a role in an alleged attempt on the life of a man because he slept through his 'big brother's' phone calls, a court heard yesterday.
Chan Tsz-him, 19, who has spent most of the last two days testifying under immunity on behalf of the prosecution, told the Court of First Instance that while he had been involved on and off with the planning for the bungled, alleged hit on 50-year-old Tang Pui-cheung, he had missed all of the action because he was asleep.
Four men are standing trial for the plot to kill Mr Tang, who told the court last week he was nothing more than a retired chicken hawker.
Hung Pui-hung, 42, Tang Yuk-fai, 30, and Sze King-kwok, 33, have pleaded not guilty to one count each of conspiracy to commit murder, while Wong Dung, 17, pleaded not guilty to one count of assisting an offender to commit a crime and one count of possessing a pistol without a licence.
Chan's revelation of the circumstances surrounding his failure to be at the scene of the alleged hit came during cross examination by Lawrence Lok Ying-kam SC, counsel for Hung and Tang.
Mr Lok questioned why such information had never been volunteered by Chan in any of his recorded statements or in his testimony.
