Meanwhile, in the other SAR ... Macau's elderly and underprivileged families will receive a boost following the Salvation Army's annual Hong Kong and Macau O! Day held earlier this month. Guided by clues and a map, almost 300 participants navigated their way through the streets of Hong Kong and Macau in a race to the final check point at Macau Tower. The teams raised more than HK$1.7 million that will be used to support about 100 welfare programmes in the two regions. Salvation Army fund-raising director Irene Lo said the annual event was crucial to the organisation's charity work. 'The event is a lot of work to organise, but the participants seem to really enjoy it,' Ms Lo said. 'It is set up like a treasure hunt where teams are given a map and they have to find different locations.' Participants run or walk their way through the course, getting stamps at each check point. Ms Lo said the Salvation Army was looking to expand its services in Macau and was hopeful of receiving support from the Macau government. She said the money raised at the annual charity event would be used to support elderly residents in Macau who live alone. 'We have a centre where they can come and we organise classes and they get to meet other people,' she said. 'Most of the time these elderly people are home alone and we also organise visits to Hong Kong so they can get out and enjoy themselves.' The money will also be used to provide clothes and household items to Macau's needy families. Ms Lo said about 20 people from Macau participated in the event and she hoped this would increase next year. 'Most participants said they would like to join in again next year,' she said. 'We are definitely aiming to expand the event and that would involve getting more support in Macau.'
