Blaze at Olympia

Greece's worst fires in living memory raged through the southern part of the country in August. The devastating fires, which began suddenly and quickly got out of control, ravaged woodland, olive farms, orchards and entire villages. At least 64 people lost their lives. The president of Greece, Karolos Papoulias, declared the fires a national catastrophe as neighbouring countries sent in hundreds of firefighters to control the flames that burned 202,340 hectares of land. The area around Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, was very badly affected. In a local village, a mother and her four children were killed fighting the raging fires that engulfed their home.
