HONG Kong's manufacturing industry is becoming more involved with acquiring ISO certification.
In 1990, the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Association (HKQAA) awarded about 20 certifications, but last year more than 100 had been issued.
Now, even toy manufacturers and clothing companies are getting certification, companies whose products had previously sold without any international quality label.
While there is still a long way to go before everyone can be completely satisfied with the overall quality of Hong Kong's manufacturing industry, the Industry Department is thinking about the next move after ISO.
''Our ISO 9000 campaign ended last year,'' said Denise Yue, Director-General of Industry, and the chairman of the Organising Committee of the Governor's Award.
''We hope for more money and our next campaign will be Total Quality Management (TQM).'' Quality went beyond just training staff, and Ms Yue said the whole culture of a company must be geared to quality.
