Despite losing his father less than a month ago, singer Andy Hui Chi-on has recovered from his grief and released his new album, Unprecedented, yesterday.
'Of course, I'm really sad that my father is now gone. A lot of good memories of him have been flashing through my mind in the past couple of weeks. But I know that he would not want to see my work affected because of him. I have to stay strong and get myself together again.'
His mother passed away in July 1998. At that time he was so miserable that he nearly cancelled his concerts that September. But he managed to see the show through. He saved his mother a seat and performed a song that she used to sing to him.
Recalling some of the happy moments with his father, Hui said: 'My father was a great person. Maybe he didn't smile a lot, but when he did it just melted my heart.'
Hui, 40, comes from a family of nine. When he was small, his family was very poor and lived in a small flat in Wong Tai Sin. In 1986, when Hui (right) was a Form Seven student, he took part in the New Talent Singing Awards hosted by TVB Jade and came second, launching his career as a singer.
'My dad never tried to stop me from being a singer. He was always very supportive of me because he knew that I love what I'm doing,' Hui said.
Hui continued living with his father and his elder brother's family for years after becoming a singer.
