Annie Lennox
Songs of Mass Destruction
(Sony BMG)
Annie Lennox is 52 years old, but still defiant. 'Let your voice be heard,' she implores on the anthemic Sing, a rousing We Are the World-type track with 23 famous female artists lending their pipes. A highlight of Songs of Mass Destruction, it bears testimony to the fire that continues to sear the singer's conscience.
Apparently eager to improve the song's chances of success (proceeds go to the Treatment Action Campaign for HIV treatment and prevention), Lennox asked everyone from Madonna and Gladys Knight to Joss Stone and Faith Hill if they would volunteer their talents by ad-libbing where they felt comfortable and belting out the chorus.
Lennox is just as right-on elsewhere on Songs of Mass Destruction, her fourth solo outing in the past 15 years. It contains 11 self-penned tracks, several of which suggest Lennox's frustration at being deceived or disappointed, either on a personal or public level.
