The 34-year-old construction worker ran a tactical race over the hilly 21.1km course on Bride's Pool Road by staying just off the leader's pace until the mid-race point.

Ng then made his move to the front of the 1,000-strong field and gradually pulled away to record a comfortable victory in a good time of one hour, 14 minutes and 27 seconds.

Yesterday's race was excellent preparation for Ng, who will represent Hong Kong in the Singapore Marathon early next month as part of the Great Race series, of which the Hong Kong Marathon is the fourth and final leg.

For the second successive year, Choi Tat-ming overtook early race leader Adrian King at the 20km mark to record yet another second place.

'I always seem to come second in this race,' said Choi. 'Maybe next year I'll win it. I don't know how many times I've come second, but it's a lot.'
