Preparations for the year-end reopening of the beleaguered Ngong Ping 360 cable car are on schedule, the new managing director of the Lantau Island attraction said yesterday.

Morris Cheung Siu-wa said the exact opening date would be set once the government received a progress report.

He expected to submit two reports - on the system's retesting and recommissioning, and on the annual survey - to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department in about two weeks, for approval.

A department spokesman said the time required to review the reports would depend on whether further clarification was needed.

'We are now working according to schedule,' Mr Cheung said. 'Our aim is to reopen the cable car system around the end of the year.'

A reliability test using various load and operating speed conditions, as well as emergency drills, would be carried out, and there would be more training for staff, he said.
