Tomorrow-Sat, 8pm, Hong Kong Cultural Centre
Passion, flair and high energy combine for one of the highlights of the Mediterranean Arts Festival, Vocal Flamenco, the Gala Flamenca Concert, featuring Carmen Linares and Miguel Poveda.
Few musical performances can match the sheer spectacle of the centuries-old Andalusian artform and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has successfully paired two of the genre's leading lights.
Billed as an evening of evocative songs and scintillating rhythm that simmers from a red-hot encounter between flamenco 'diva' Linares and 'prince' Poveda, the show is rounded out by Mexican guitarist Juan Carlos Romero and Spanish dancer Rocio Molina (right).
Spanish cantaora Linares, who studied in the flamenco companies of Madrid, has been at the forefront of the scene for a remarkable 37 years. Through her live shows and albums she seduces audiences with a style that is both gentle and wild.
The grand old dame's young beau for the show is Poveda, one of a new generation of flamenco singers who, by combining subtle innovations with a deep respect for tradition, has kept the art burning into the 21st century.
