1887: The London Missionary Society and Ho Kai, the first Hong Kong-born Chinese qualified in western medicine, open the Alice Memorial Hospital, which housed the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, the city's first western medical school and the early precursor to HKU.
1892: Sun Yat-sen graduates from the college.
1907: The Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese is renamed the Hong Kong College of Medicine.
1912: HKU is formally opened and the college is incorporated within the university.
1927: Eva Hotung becomes HKU's first female medical graduate.
1937: HKU's teaching hospital, the Queen Mary, opens.
1941: Teaching and research suspended until August 1945 after Japan invades Hong Kong.
1964: The first open-heart surgery in Hong Kong.
1969: The first kidney transplant.
1974: Hong Kong government approves the establishment of a new medical school at CUHK.

1987: Hong Kong's first birth via Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer at CUHK.
1989: CUHK establishes Hong Kong's first cleft-lip and cleft-palate clinic.
1990: Hong Kong's first bone marrow transplant takes place at HKU.
1991: CUHK conducts Hong Kong's first paediatric bone marrow transplant.
1991: The first liver transplant in Hong Kong takes place at HKU.
1992: Hong Kong's first heart transplant conducted at HKU.
1994: Cord blood transplant service begins at HKU.

1998: HKU's School of Chinese Medicine is established.
1999: CUHK initiates Hong Kong's first randomised cancer trial using traditional Chinese medicine.

2002: HKU's new medical campus on Sassoon Road opens.
2003: HKU researchers discover the Sars coronavirus.
2005: HKU medical faculty renamed the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
2006: CUHK makes a breakthrough in cancer research by developing a type of photodynamic treatment of tumours.
2007: CUHK Professor Yeung Chung-kwong develops the minimally-invasive robotic da Vinci S Surgical  System.
2007: HKU medical school celebrates its 120th anniversary.
