Mr Cheung, who is facing the same opponent, incumbent Chow Chun-fai, in the Mong Kok South constituency of Yau Tsim Mong, says his homosexuality helps him understand underprivileged groups.

Aged 32, and a founding and executive committee member of the League of Social Democrats, Mr Cheung is also the youngest committee member of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China.

In 2003, he lost to Mr Chow by 300 votes.

The gay and civil rights activist is open about his sexual preference and is using it in his campaign, with the slogan 'Queering the district council election' prominently displayed on his campaign leaflets.

Although he admits he faced severe pressure in the previous election, he rejects suggestions that his sexuality is an election obstacle.
