Fanling star stays in contention but his mates not enjoying rub of the green
Derek Fung fired a gutsy round of 68 to finish day one of the UBS Hong Kong Open as the best-placed player from the SAR.
Fung carded five birdies and three bogies in his two-under par effort to take a share of 30th position on a day of contrasting fortunes for local representatives at the 49-year-old championship.
'It was a very solid round,' said Fung. 'I didn't hit the ball great, but I putted well and made some good saves when I missed the green. All in all, it was a good score.'
Having lost his playing privileges on the Asian Tour, Fung, a member of the Hong Kong Golf Club, hasn't played a lot of competitive golf of late.
But despite this, the 38-year-old wasn't at all surprised by his encouraging display.
'Not playing much has actually helped me. I'm feeling fresh and when I do play, I have played well. My form has been good - I managed to win the HKPGA Order of Merit this year - and I know the course as well as anyone out there. As a result, I'm feeling confident and looking forward to the rest of the tournament.'
