SURVEYORS and other industry experts want the Government to streamline guidelines on how floor space is defined and make them into law to end abuse by landlords and developers.
But the Government says it has no plans to do so, despite years of exploitation.
The introduction of one legally binding method of measuring floor space based on definitions in the Government's Consent Scheme, which was introduced last year, is supported by many in the property industry.
But Tom Berry, principal solicitor at the Lands Department, said the Government had no plans to introduce legislation because ''being Hong Kong, the starting point is people should look after their own interests''.
Mr Berry said the Law Reform Commission was studying the problems of misleading sales brochures and was expected to make an announcement after Chinese New Year.
The call for the measurement law comes as the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors is about to release amended guidelines to its ''Saleable Area'' guidelines.
