Thailand's luxury seaside phenomenon may have been launched on islands in the south along the Andaman coast, but holiday home hunters seek new destinations.

Those who once eyed Pattaya and Phuket are looking elsewhere. Islands that were a haven for backpackers are maturing and offering better returns on their land use.

Savills (Thailand) managing director Robert Collins said: 'We are seeing a strong trend towards Krabi in preference to Phuket these days, and definitely the sales rates for Krabi seem to be slightly better than Phuket.

'The environment is less developed and the pricing reflects that it is a relatively new market and can't match the Phuket market,' he said.

'And I think that's possibly a reflection that Phuket and Samui are overpriced, rather than that Krabi is cheap.'

Mr Collins pointed to the new road network throughout the province and said the infrastructure was excellent.

'This is where Krabi really is ahead of the game, it has the infrastructure in place. What it lacks, if anything, is there isn't enough supply.'
