More than 400 people 'walked out of Tin Shui Wai' to government headquarters in Central yesterday demanding a hospital for their district and cuts in transport fares.

The rally, organised by Tin Shui Wai Development Network and the pro-democracy Civic Party and Democratic Party, started at 10am.

The protesters were split into two, with about 150 riding bicycles from Tin Shui Wai to Yuen Long West Rail station. A further 250 people walked to the Tin Shui Wai West Rail station. Both groups took buses to Central, where they assembled near the ferry pier. Then 60 cyclists rode to the government headquarters and other residents and legislators marched.

One resident, a Ms Chow, brought her 10-year-old son to the rally. She said residents were demanding more jobs in Tin Shui Wai. 'We must walk out to save ourselves,' Ms Chow said. 'We need more job opportunities. If we have more jobs we will have less time to think about protesting.'

Single parent Lai Chau-keung, of Mong Kok, and her daughter joined the cyclists in solidarity with single parents in Tin Shui Wai.

The marchers reached government headquarters at about 1.30pm and handed a petition to an official. Some used chalk to write their demands - such as 'we want a hospital' or 'don't ignore us' - on the ground.
