Tin Shui Wai will get a telephone betting centre providing up to 3,000 jobs  to ease unemployment, a government source has said.
It will be the Jockey Club's fifth such centre, with the other four also based in the New Territories.
The news is expected to be announced by Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah  when he visits the district on Friday.
Government sources said government  organisations had joined hands to  help Tin Shui Wai by providing more jobs and family support. The area has been plagued by  unemployment,  suicides and domestic  abuse.
The chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, Tam Yiu-chung,  said the government was still in talks with the Jockey Club and he did not know when  the centre would be launched.
'There'll be three shifts, and it'll operate 24 hours' a day, he said. 'One of the car parks in Tin Shui Wai will be used for it.'
The Jockey Club and the Tung Wah group of hospitals will also open an integrated community centre for young people in the district.
A source said that although it would take about a year to set up a betting centre, it was an important step towards fostering much-needed economic activities in the district.
According to the blog of DAB vice-chairwoman Ann Chiang Lai-wan,    her party made 22 suggestions to the government in a meeting yesterday to create jobs and improve community services in Tin Shui Wai.  Ideas included building hospitals  and introducing a bus route from Tin Shui Wai North to Yuen Long.
Ms Chiang had earlier suggested building a hawkers' centre, a street of pubs and a bazaar to create jobs.
