MANCHESTER has won the English nomination to bid for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Games Council for England voted 17-7 yesterday in favour of the Manchester bid over London.
Manchester has twice launched losing Olympic bids, including a failed bid this year for the 2000 Games which were awarded to Sydney.
Earlier yesterday Sheffield made a dramatic exit from the bidding just 45 minutes before its final presentation.
Sheffield leader Professor Gareth Roberts said his team felt they could not sign the financial and legal indemnities required by the Games Council.
Manchester, with GBP187 million needed to build the city's planned Millenium Stadium, had easily the most expensive proposal.
