THE Jockey Club has been forced to abandon a second griffin race following a subtle boycott by trainers upset by handicapping decisions.
Trainers are also making use of a current anomaly in the handicapping system here where an unraced griffin can actually start his racing career in Class Five in his second season.
Director of Racing Philip Johnston confirmed that a second section of a planned griffin event had to be abandoned because of lack of entries. This followed on from the abandonment of a griffin race due to have been held in late December.
Handicapping decisions in relation to griffins have also upset trainers with local mentor Alex Wong Yu-on still fuming over the 22 points Winning Chance went up after winning a race last season.
Several trainers have consulted owners and advised them not to run their griffins in their first year.
Said one trainer: ''It makes sense. We have had very obvious examples of griffins being punitively handicapped for winning one race.
