'Small technical hiccups are unavoidable'
The Ngong Ping 360 cable car will not be totally free of faults when it is reopened later this month, an MTR executive has warned.
However, delays caused by minor technical errors should not take up more than five minutes a day.
The senior executive said that with more than 26,900 sensors on the cable to monitor the spacing between 109 gondolas, the system would be halted when any of them sent irregular signals.
'The sensor can become sensitive in a windy situation; it may detect that a door is opened or a cabin is in the wrong position when it's not,' he said.
The executive said it was necessary to have so many sensors to maintain safety but action was taken to prevent them from being over-sensitive - including tidying up their wiring. 'In such a huge system, small technical hiccups are unavoidable, but they should not cause more than five minutes of delays for every eight hours of service.'
