The former managing director of the company that operated the Ngong Ping 360 cable car when one of its empty gondolas fell to the ground during a nighttime brake test is being prosecuted for negligence.
The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department confirmed yesterday that summonses were issued on Tuesday to Bill Calderwood and to the former cable-car operator Ngong Ping 360 Ltd, previously called Skyrail-ITM (HK).
The company and Mr Calderwood are accused of negligently 'failing to provide to an officer of the ... company with necessary procedures and instructions to perform a brake test, in relation to an aerial ropeway', thus rendering the ropeway 'unsafe for persons in the vicinity of it'.
Mr Calderwood is scheduled to appear in Tsuen Wan Court on January 10.
The Lantau attraction's owner, the MTR Corporation, took over management of the HK$1 billion project from the Australia-based operator in September after a government report said the latter acted poorly in managing and maintaining the system, leading to the accident.
The cable-car ride is expected to reopen this month pending the government's approval after the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department reviews progress reports.
