Mainlanders' rights abused, say activists
Rights groups say they will alert the United Nations to Hospital Authority charges imposed on mainland wives of Hong Kong men - which have been blamed for triggering abortions.
Two human rights groups and one advocacy group said they would raise the issue with the UN human rights committee in an effort to force the authority to drop the charges.
They said the policy victimised children and wives of Hong Kong residents and violated international human rights treaties which guaranteed women and children the right to 'life and access to health care'.
The Sunday Morning Post reported previously that at least five mainland wives of Hong Kong men claimed to have aborted their babies because they could not afford the HK$39,000 obstetric fee payable since February.
Ten mainland wives of Hong Kong men had miscarriages after paying the delivery fee with money they had borrowed. They said they could not afford the HK$700 fee for a prenatal check and HK$3,300 for a one-night stay in a public hospital when they experienced problems with their pregnancies.
