Medical and dermatological-based skin care is a rising star in the beauty industry. In today's want-it-and-want-it-now society, these products are rapidly gaining popularity among women looking for a quick, simple fix for their skin care woes.

Since these products were introduced to the local market growth has been swift, according to Neo Derm.

'More medical aesthetical products have launched in the local market and Hong Kong is rapidly catching up with the United States and European trends,' said Mickey Lai, Neo Derm's product manager for the Bicelle and SkinMedica brands. She added that many people were making the shift from using traditional skin care products, or those that maintained the skin's current quality, to dermatological-based skin care.

The basis for dermatological skin care was to provide products that offered problem-solving solutions to improve skin quality. These products combined dermatological technology with clinically proven efficacy, Ms Lai said.

Many are developed by dermatologists and they contain unique, patented formulations designed to tackle skin concerns such as anti-ageing, anti-oxidation and pigmentation.

Neo Derm is the exclusive distributor of five dermatological skin care product brands including NeoStrata which, it says, is recognised as a leader in the development of alpha hydroxyl acid and polyhydroxy acid skin care which target wrinkles, age spots, pigmentation and acne.

Other brands under its umbrella include Restylane, a European dermatological treatment product brand designed to be used by trained therapists. Its patented dermal filler product - meant to reduce wrinkles and achieve facial contouring - is said to be the first product with non-animal-based hyaluronic acid approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and to obtain a CE or Conformite Europeenne mark for European health and safety. The acid is manufactured by bacterial fermentation resulting in an ingredient similar to that found in skin, which is said to eliminate the risk of allergic reactions.
