IRISH champion jockey Mick Kinane has been sidelined for two weeks on doctors' orders following his horrific Happy Valley fall on Wednesday night.

 The 34-year-old world star has made a remarkable recovery from a fall that shocked hardened racegoers but X-rays have revealed two cracked ribs.

 The Jockey Club's official doctors have recommended a two-week break for Kinane who now looks like riding again on February 19.

 But Kinane, prostrate with pain for over 36 hours, was walking yesterday and expects to be released from Canossa Hospital today.

 He said last night: ''I am still hurting but it is a lot better and I am mobile.

 ''I understand that they have recommended that I don't ride again for a fortnight and I had that date definitely in my mind.

 ''But a lot will depend on what happens in the interim. I don't like being out of action and if it all clears up then I'll be riding sooner than that,'' he said.

 Kinane's rapid recovery means he will almost certainly jet out tonight for a week-long holiday in Thailand - with the emphasis on pure relaxation.

 Meanwhile, television viewers throughout Britain and Ireland will today see the fall that could easily have had serious repercussions for the jockey who carried all before him in 1993.

 The Jockey Club received a request from the British Broadcasting Corporation for the race footage and it was sent yesterday.

 It is expected to be screened nationwide today on the Saturday afternoon Grandstand programme.

 The head-on Stewards' patrol film shows the fall in gripping detail and countless viewers will wonder how Kinane basically walked away from it.

 Meanwhile, the Jockey Club will switch some of the remaining four meetings from equitrack to grass, ironically in the wake of one of the more entertaining meetings on the synthetic surface on Wednesday.

 And there are increasing doubts about the return of South African Felix Coetzee to Hong Kong.

 Former champion trainer Brian Kan Ping-chee's retained jockey returned home to sort out domestic problems a month ago and was expected back this week.

 But Kan has been unable to contact him by telephone despite a number of calls and has received no reply to a query faxed to Coetzee.

 French rider Eric St Martin is currently deputising for Coetzee and has had a successful 10-day spell.

 In the event of Coetzee not returning, St Martin could be in for an extended stay.

 Director of Racing Philip Johnston said: ''It would depend on a couple of factors. If Brian wanted him to stay they we would give it consideration but I doubt if he would be here until the end of the season.''
