Expo the perfect platform for HK to showcase what it can do
Hong Kong will be taking part in Shanghai's 2010 World Expo.
As part of its involvement, it is seeking to join an international contest in the Urban Best Practices Area.
The government has not yet decided which theme to adopt - livable cities; sustainable urbanisation; protection and utilisation of historical heritage; or technological innovation in [a] built environment. I suggest that Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah, who is leading the bid, should listen to cultural-sector people, land-use designers and developers, as well as artists and architects, before planning ahead.
Planners and activists in Hong Kong, have been critical regarding several urban issues, including heritage protection and pollution.
In fact, various improvement projects have been proposed to enhance the city's environment - such as the Sai Kung promenade enhancement project, improvement of the harbourfront, and revitalisation of the arts centre - though they are still not yet completed. However, they should be included if we enter this international contest at the expo, as these projects show the government's determination to improve the environment.
Besides, it is suggested by designers and planners that existing infrastructure, for instance, the Central escalator and SoHo area, can be introduced to show off a place in Hong Kong where market-driven innovation flourishes.
