A woman was conned into giving more than HK$2.7 million to her ex-fiance, who turned out to be a married man, the District Court heard yesterday.
Cheng Yuen-chu, now 43, met Jackson Wong Kin-chung, 46, in April 2000 through a personal advertisement in a newspaper and by June that year they had decided to marry the following March.
But Ms Cheng discovered in February 2001 that Wong had been married since 1984, the court heard.
Wong pleaded not guilty before Deputy District Court Judge David Dufton yesterday to one charge of fraud and four counts of evasion of liability by deception.
Opening the case, prosecutors said Ms Cheng withdrew more than HK$2 million from accounts she operated jointly with her brother, Cheng Haang, ostensibly to help Wong buy a taxi.
Mr  Cheng asked Wong to sign a loan agreement in December 2000.
Wong had  repaid HK$300,000 to Mr  Cheng by January 2001.
To convince Ms  Cheng the taxi investment was a genuine deal, Wong in January 2001 showed her a copy of a taxi registration certificate  naming registered owner Lo Kwok-ming.
From 2001 to 2006, Ms Cheng pursued Wong for repayment of loans but she also lent him a further sum of HK$335,000 between 2004 and 2005, the prosecution said.
Between December 2004 and August 2005, Wong allegedly handed to Ms Cheng  six post-dated cheques to repay  a total of HK$483,000. But all bounced because the accounts were closed.
On August 17 last year,  Ms Cheng  notified police and Wong was arrested on October 23.
Police investigations revealed that Mr Lo was the registered owner of a taxi  which he had never intended to sell.  The hearing  continues on Monday.
