The exhibition one more, please  brings contemporary art within the reach of the public, writes Elaine Yau
A contemporary art exhibition celebrating childhood innocence is being staged in Central.
The 2007 Hong Kong Art Buffet one more, please Contemporary Art Exhibition, organised by Fubon Art Foundation, was arranged by the department of cultural and religious studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The show features artworks by 12 local and overseas
artists and many of the works were modelled on popular cartoon figures or children's toys.
By using dolls, cherubic figurines and other children's knick-knacks, the show aims to take visitors on a nostalgic trip back to their childhood and rediscover the joy and pureness.
'One of our objectives is to make art more accessible by placing the works in public spaces so that everyone can enjoy the visual feast,' said curator Oscar Ho.
In addition to the colourful exhibits  popular with children, there are some thought-provoking displays that should provide food for thought for visitors.
Taiwanese artist Hsu Chia-yu, for example, created a pair of ceramic works that mock the infamous Battle of Iwo Jima which took place during the second world war. In a bold attempt to add humour to a gloomy episode in history, troops of shrunken plastic soldiers swarm around two pastries.
Conquering the Donuts provides a sharp look at the absurdity and cruelty of war.
The show received overwhelming response last year. The organisers believe the exhibition can make people more aware of the importance of public art.
'Last year's exhibition successfully created an art gallery without walls in a bustling Hong Kong hot spot.
'We believe this year's show will boost appreciation of art and culture among locals,' said Lee Jin-yi, managing director and CEO of Fubon Bank (Hong Kong).
A series of workshops were conducted last month to give students a chance to be
creative under the guidance
of artists.
More than 400  students attended the Create Your Own Pop Ball workshops. The fruits of their labour are displayed at the show along with other exhibits.
The exhibition runs until February 17 at the Hong Kong City Hall at 5 Edinburgh Place, Central. Admission is free.
