Cyclist Wong Kam-po is hot favourite to be named the top athlete of 2007 when the Bank of China Hong Kong Sports Star Awards are announced next month.
The 34-year-old (pictured) clinched Hong Kong's first world championships gold medal when he won the men's scratch race in Spain last year.
He also earned a berth for the Beijing Games in the individual road race with a fourth place at the world B championships in South Africa.
The cyclist was also the winner for 2006 after his gold-medal performance at the Doha Asian Games where he triumphed in the individual road race.
'He did exceptionally well in 2007 with his gold medal at the world championships and is certainly a top contender for the award,' said Vivien Fung, vice-president of the Olympic Committee and Sports Federation of Hong Kong, the organiser of the awards.
Eight sports stars will be voted on by a judging panel, the sports media and the public. More than 45,000 public votes have been received and voting will be closed next Thursday. Each star will receive an incentive of HK$30,000 while an additional HK$50,000 will be given to the best overall athlete among the eight.
