Apple of their eyes

Innovation and the iPod seem to go hand in hand. Accessories that either extend the use of Apple's media player or score style points continue to materialise.

The latest examples of devices that bear Apple's 'made for iPod' seal of quality are the TuneStudio (below right), a four-channel audio mixer from United States-based Belkin International, and the i24 bedside speaker system (right), from Hong Kong's EOps Technology.

For the record Portable and tough enough to withstand life in a rehearsal room or garage, the TuneStudio enables the creation of high-quality digital recordings directly onto an iPod. A first of its kind, this mixer allows the input of up to four instruments or audio sources and records the audio in 16-bit, 44-kilohertz quality for instant playback.

It has a built-in USB interface, allowing the input of audio to or from a Windows-based or Macintosh computer. Its high-quality stereo compressor provides enhanced audio dynamics and keeps sound levels within the recording limits of the iPod. A light-emitting diode panel shows audio level, power status, peak indication, compressor activity and recording status.

Bedroom companion Designed as a stylish alternative to the typical radio-alarm clock, the i24, which measures 21.5cm by 13cm by 10.5cm, fits easily on a typical bedside table. Though compact, it features a universal dock that is compatible with most versions of the iPod, a dual-music alarm setup (FM radio or downloaded music), a 24-hour and scrolling text clock, and an integrated 3-inch subwoofer.

The device was designed in association with architectural firm AFSO, which has been responsible for the design of bars, restaurants and residences in London, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong.

Passion and fashion The TuneStudio should be of interest to any musician or podcaster who wants to jam on the road or record shows on location. Belkin confirmed the device's availability in Hong Kong by next month at a cost equivalent to its US price of US$399.

Aimed at Hong Kong fashionistas and Mac enthusiasts, the i24 is priced at HK$1,190 and can be found at all three branches of G.O.D.
