Ten small paper packets containing a total of about 100ml of liquid mercury were discovered in four Ikea wardrobes in a home being decorated in Sai Kung, sparking a toxic scare yesterday. Firemen sealed the house off while an Environment Protection Department contractor collected the mercury and sent it to a chemical waste plant. Nobody was reported harmed. Mercury is toxic and can damage the nervous system and brain.
