On her second visit to The Peak, Hongkonger Yeung Kai said she was amazed by the popularity of a fast food restaurant inside the Peak Tower among tourists.

But many of them were not eating. They crowded a corner of the Burger King on the first floor, struggling to shoot the scenery from the eatery.

Soon after Ms Yeung ascended two levels, she realised why. There was a security guard asking visitors to queue up and pay for access to the Sky Terrace - the highest observation point on The Peak.

'I turned and left immediately,' she said. 'I felt very angry about being asked to pay to go up to the observation deck. It is the right of Hongkongers to admire the beauty of the cityscape, and we have enjoyed it for many years for free.'

Ms Yeung was not alone in feeling frustrated as many tourists joined her lament.

Jan Newman, from Germany, said he did not expect his journey to The Peak to be so costly.
