Mainland technology giant Lenovo, maker of the popular ThinkPad notebook and ThinkCentre personal computer, has launched the IdeaPad notebook and IdeaCentre desktop system. The IdeaPad Y510, a sleek Intel processor- and Windows system-based laptop with a 15.4-inch widescreen display, is the first in the range to reach Hong Kong.
Look sharp Veering away from the ThinkPad's utilitarian motif, Lenovo has given a modern look to the IdeaPad. A 'frameless screen' design uses an ultra-thin bezel to make the screen appear as if it stretches to the edge of the notebook cover.
For optimal viewing, a special hinge construction puts the display a bit further from the eyes than is the case with traditional notebooks.
The IdeaPad also feels different, thanks to a distinctive 'light weave texture' on the notebook case.
This touchy-feely theme extends to the device's touch-sensitive multimedia controls, conveniently located atop the full-size keyboard.
Face the future The Y510 offers as standard a package of features once limited to high-end laptops. An integrated 1.3-megapixel camera, combined with Lenovo's VeriFace face-recognition software, helps control access to the IdeaPad by recognising when its owner is at the keyboard. It can be set so the system locks if the program determines its user has stepped away.
